Office Building
A timber office building designed as part of a closed competition for a company’s new headquarters.
Starting from a cuboid mass, the form of the building was shaped by a series of incisions, designed at the points where interior and exterior meet — entrances, view openings, and skylights. At the key nodal points within the building, spaces for meeting, collaborative work, and relaxation were created. The elevations were formed using a system of folding louvre panels, allowing for the regulation of heat gains while simultaneously lending the facade a dynamic and ever-changing quality.

The Ambient project was awarded second place in a closed competition organized by the Burkietowicz Group. Selected architects were tasked with designing a concept for an “office building of the future” using timber frame technology. The company was seeking inspiration as it prepared for the construction of its new headquarters. In response to rapidly advancing climate change, it decided to take steps toward reducing its negative environmental impact and to use wood — a natural material — in its next construction project.
As this would be its first experience with this technology, the company wished to draw on the expertise of a range of specialists. From competition participants, it expected creative designs that would combine aesthetic and practical considerations, addressing the future needs of the building’s users while looking beyond the building itself to its wider surroundings.

The proposed layout of the building conveys a sense of openness and spatial continuity. In place of traditional corridors, vibrant communal zones have been designed, offering views of greenery and — through skylights — of the sky above. Openings in the ceiling and open stairwells provides visual connections between the ground and upper floor levels.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Burkietowicz Group — not only for the award granted, but also for organizing a competition that helps promote ecology and new technologies in construction. We hope that the timber office building will be realized and will create a welcoming space for its employees, one that supports both work and opportunities for integration and relaxation.
